Wasp Nest Removal Cheadle Hulme

Cheadle Hulme fills the gap between Cheadle and Bramhall, and its housing is unusually consistent. Away from the village centre and the station, street after street is a 1930s three-bedroom semi with a bay at the front — the grid off Councillor Lane, the roads either side of Bramhall Lane South, most of Gillbent and the streets running down towards Bruntwood Park. It is textbook semi-detached suburbia, and that matters, because two details on that build repeat on nearly every job we attend in SK8.

Where we find nests in Cheadle Hulme

• The boxed soffit. The original timber eaves on these semis were boxed in, and most have since been over-clad in uPVC. Wherever new board meets old timber there is a gap about the width of a pencil, running the length of the house. Common wasps (Vespula vulgaris) find it in June and we are still treating that same detail in September. It is the position we attend more than any other all season.
• The bay roof junction. Where the small tiled canopy over the front bay meets the main wall, the flashing and the mortar fillet often part company after ninety years. The void behind sits directly above the front door, so you tend to notice it early — a steady line of wasps working in and out at first-floor height, usually on the sunniest elevation.
• Loft voids behind slipped hip and ridge tiles. Hipped roofs are common here, and the tiles at the bottom of the hip take the most weather. A colony that gets in this way builds over a bedroom ceiling, and you usually hear it before you see it.
• Garages, side alleys and porch roofs. The 1930s layout leaves a narrow gap between pairs of semis, later filled with a garage or a flat-roofed extension. Those felt-to-brick junctions, and the dry space under a garage roof, suit German wasps (Vespula germanica).
• Sheds, log stores and the base of a hedge. Long back gardens with mature privet and leylandii, and the tree cover along the Ladybrook and through Bruntwood Park, give tree wasps (Dolichovespula sylvestris) somewhere to hang an exposed nest.

You do not need to find the nest before calling. If wasps are going in and out of one point over and over, that is enough for us to work from. We follow the flight line when we arrive.

If it turns out not to be wasps

Hornets are simply large wasps, so the treatment and the price are the same. Bumblebees are rounder, furrier and much slower, and their colonies die back naturally by the end of summer without the nest ever being used again. If it is somewhere you can walk past, we will normally tell you to leave it be rather than take your money for it. Where a bumblebee nest genuinely has to go, that is £70. Honeybees are different again — a dense swarm hanging on a branch or a fence post is one a local beekeeper may collect, so that is the call to make first.

What the job costs

£60, fixed, for a wasp or hornet nest anywhere in Cheadle Hulme. That covers the visit, the treatment and a free return if the nest is still active afterwards. £70 for a bumblebee nest that has to be treated.
