Where we find nests in Davenport

Davenport Park was made a conservation area in 1979, with the boundary widened in 2005, and it filled in slowly from the 1890s up to the war as an exclusive suburb of large detached villas standing in generous grounds. Around that private core sit Edwardian and inter-war semis along Bramhall Lane and Garners Lane, and steadily plainer housing out towards Great Moor and Woodsmoor. Each of those has its own weak points.

• Deep soffits and ornate bargeboards on the big villas. The Victorian and Edwardian houses around Davenport Park Road and Kennerley Road carry long timber eaves and decorative gable trim, and any split behind the fascia gives wasps a dry run the length of the roofline.
• Elaborate slate roofs with valleys and turrets. These houses were built to be looked at, so the roofscape is a jumble of gables, valley gutters and ridge lines. A single slipped slate over a back bedroom will do it, and the first thing people notice is a rustling overhead.
• Lead flashings and rendered detailing. The lead over a canted bay roof, and the hairline cracks where pebbledash meets a bargeboard, both offer a way in that is invisible from the drive.
• Coach houses and garden stores. The long plots behind these properties still hold plenty of old brick outbuildings, and German wasps (Vespula germanica) settle into a dry store or workshop roof readily.
• Mature trees and thick boundary hedges. Big gardens with old timber along the unadopted roads pick up aerial nests built in the open by tree wasps (Dolichovespula sylvestris), grey and papery, often at head height in a hedge.
• Sunny banks towards Woodsmoor station. The lower ground near the Buxton line drains quickly and holds the sun, which suits ground-nesting common wasps (Vespula vulgaris) that are foraging well into the gardens by August.

The Davenport Park villas

Davenport Park is the highest-value pocket inside Stockport’s own boundary, a private grid of unadopted roads that took roughly forty years to build out. The houses are large, detached and set well back, and that shapes the job. A nest is often tucked into a third storey or a turret, beyond ladder reach from the ground, and the roofs are the sort you work on carefully to avoid disturbing original slate and leadwork. None of that alters the price. A colony deep inside a mature tree at the foot of a long garden is harming nobody, and we would leave it be; one in the fascia above a front door, or over a porch you walk under, is another matter.

What the job costs

A wasp nest costs £60, and that is the entire price. A hornet is only a large wasp as far as the treatment goes, so a hornet nest is the same £60 — noisier and more imposing, but handled the same way. Bumblebee nests are £70. The fee does not change for a three-storey villa, for ladder work, or for an evening or weekend visit, and there is nothing to pay for a second call if the first treatment leaves anything behind. Should the insects turn out to be honeybees rather than wasps, we will say so on the spot, since honeybees are outside what we do and a local beekeeper may be willing to take a swarm.
