Wasp Nest Removal Heaton Mersey

Heaton Mersey runs along the north bank of the Mersey between Heaton Moor and the motorway at Junction 2, and almost all of it sits in SK4. It is one of the quicker addresses for us to reach from Stockport, so a call first thing is usually treated the same day. Where we find nests in Heaton Mersey

The suburb filled in as a commuter district once the railway arrived at Heaton Chapel, so the bulk of the housing is late-Victorian and Edwardian: bay-fronted semis and villas along Didsbury Road, Priestnall Road and the streets dropping down towards the river, with inter-war semis behind them and newer building near the old works land off Vale Road. That stock has a fairly predictable set of weak points.

• Boxed timber eaves on the Edwardian semis. The deep soffit behind the original gutter line is the single most common thing we open up on Didsbury Road and Priestnall Road. Where uPVC cladding has been fitted over the old timber without sealing the ends, wasps get a dry cavity the full length of the run.
• Slate roof voids at the gable. One slipped slate or a lifted ridge tile on a Victorian villa is enough. The nest usually ends up sitting over a back bedroom, and the first thing people notice is a rustling sound rather than a wasp.
• Rendered gable apexes and bay leadwork. Cracks where render meets the verge, and the lead flashing over a bay roof, both give a sheltered way in that you cannot see from the pavement.
• Gardens backing onto the woodland strip. Properties along the Mersey Vale and Heaton Mersey Bowl edge pick up aerial nests in thick hedging and mature shrubs. Tree wasps (Dolichovespula sylvestris) build these out in the open, grey and papery, often at about head height.
• The old railway banks. The cutting sides drain fast and catch the sun, which suits ground-nesting common wasps (Vespula vulgaris). By August those colonies are foraging well into the gardens either side.
• Sheds, log stores and airbricks. Worth ruling out before you assume the nest is up in the roof.

The woodland edge

For a suburb this close to the A6, Heaton Mersey is unusual in having a green corridor running most of its length: the old railway land at Mersey Vale, the Bowl, and the river terrace below. A lot of gardens here have a woodland boundary rather than another garden, and that changes what we get called to. We see more aerial nests in hedges and trees than we do in the tighter streets around Heaton Norris, and a heavier tail end of the season once the colony switches from feeding grubs to hunting sugar.

Worth saying plainly: a nest well inside the trees is not doing you any harm and is not one we would treat. A nest in your fascia board, over a doorway, or beside a bin store is a different matter.

A wasp nest is £60, fixed. Hornets count as wasps here, so a hornet nest is the same £60 and the same treatment. They are bigger and a good deal louder, but they behave predictably and they are no harder to deal with. A bumblebee nest is £70.

There is no extra for a loft, no extra for working off a ladder, no evening or weekend loading, and no charge for a return visit if the first treatment does not fully clear the colony. If what you have turns out to be a honeybee swarm rather than wasps, we will tell you straight away, because honeybees are not something we treat and a local beekeeper may collect a swarm.
