Wasp Nest Removal Poynton

Poynton sits just over the county boundary from Hazel Grove, close enough that a morning call from SK12 is normally seen the same day. It is not built like the Stockport suburbs immediately north of it. Plots are larger, the roads curve instead of running in a grid, and there is a great deal more standing timber. That last point shapes the work here more than the age of the houses does.

Where we find nests in Poynton

The housing runs from the old mining cottages around the village core and Higher Poynton, through inter-war and post-war semis strung along London Road North and Chester Road, out to the low-density detached estates off Park Lane, South Park Drive and Towers Road where the gardens are deep and heavily planted.

• Deep roof overhangs on the 1960s and 70s detached estates. Shallow-pitched roofs with a wide eaves projection keep the soffit line permanently dry and sheltered, which is precisely what a queen is looking for in April. Most of our first-floor ladder work in SK12 is on that one detail.
• High in mature trees and tall boundary hedging. Tree wasps (Dolichovespula sylvestris) hang an exposed grey nest in a fork or flat against a trunk. The lime and beech around Poynton Pool, and the older planting along Towers Road and Anglesey Drive, throw up several of these a year.
• Ground nests along wooded edges. Common wasps (Vespula vulgaris) will take a bank, an old rabbit scrape or the gap under a root plate. The tree cover through Poynton Coppice and the embankments either side of the Middlewood Way put that habitat directly against back fences.
• Cottages and outbuildings around Higher Poynton. The older brick and stone up Coppice Road and Shrigley Road has thick walls, soft pointing and gaps behind slate. A colony there is usually well inside the structure before anyone hears it.
• Sheds, log stores and summer houses. German wasps (Vespula germanica) take the dry underside of a shed roof or the back of a stacked log pile. Gardens here are long enough that these sit at the far end, where nobody walks until August.
• Airbricks, porch roofs and garage junctions. On the semis along London Road North, Woodford Road and Georges Road West the traffic is often at ankle height rather than up at the roofline, which is easy to miss.

Mature trees, and what that changes

Cheshire East policy treats most of Poynton as low-density residential, and the planning record for land in and around the village returns repeatedly to the same two observations — large numbers of mature trees, and established landscaping. A fair proportion of those trees carry Tree Preservation Orders.

That has a practical consequence. In plenty of places the answer to a nest in a small tree or an overgrown hedge is simply to cut the thing back. In Poynton that option is often closed. A protected tree cannot be lopped, topped or felled without consent, and a consent application takes weeks you do not have in the middle of August. The nest has to be dealt with where it stands.

Which is fine. Dust goes into the entrance, or onto the face of an aerial nest, applied from the ground or a ladder. Nothing is pruned, nothing is taken away, and the tree is left exactly as it was.

What the job costs

£60, fixed, for a wasp or hornet nest anywhere in SK12. Hornets are only a larger wasp and the treatment is identical, so the figure does not move. That includes the visit, the treatment and a free return if there is still traffic in and out a few days later. Nothing extra for a weekend, for Higher Poynton, or for a nest that needs the long ladder.

A bumblebee nest is £70 where it genuinely has to be treated, though more often than not we will tell you to leave it and it will be gone by autumn. Wasps, hornets and bumblebees are the whole of what we do. We are not general pest control, so rodents, ants and the rest are somebody else’s trade.
